The short version

Gas, radiant and induction cooktops fail differently

Gas cooktops light burners with igniters and a spark module, much like a range, but the parts sit in a shallow box under the counter. Radiant cooktops heat a ribbon element under glass, controlled by switches or a touch board. Both are simple and their failures are usually one burner or one element.

Induction cooktops heat the pan directly with a magnetic field from copper coils under the glass. They depend on power boards, cooling fans and pan sensors. When an induction zone fails, the fault is often a power board or a fan, not the coil itself.

Many cooktops are serviced from above by lifting the glass or burner box out of the counter. Others need access from the cabinet below. We check your model before we start so stone and tile edges are protected.

Parts and repairs

Cooktop components we repair

We repair cooktops from Wolf, Thermador, Bosch, Miele, GE, Café, Monogram, KitchenAid, JennAir, Samsung, LG, Frigidaire, Viking, Dacor and Fisher & Paykel. We read error codes and test boards before replacing glass or coils.

  • Induction power boardDrives the coils. A failed board kills one or two zones at once.
  • Induction cooling fanKeeps the electronics cool. A blocked or failed fan triggers overheat errors.
  • Touch control boardReads your finger on the glass. We replace boards that no longer respond.
  • Radiant element and limiterHeat the zone and protect the glass. We replace either part from below the top.
  • Gas igniter and spark moduleRestore reliable lighting on gas cooktops.
  • Gas burner valveControls flame size. A stiff or leaking valve is replaced, never adjusted in place.
  • Glass top replacementWe replace cracked ceramic glass with the correct top for your model.
  • Downdraft blower and lift motorRestore venting on pop-up downdraft systems built behind or into the cooktop.

Step by step

How we work on a built-in cooktop

Every visit follows the same order, so you always know what comes next and what it costs.

  1. Call with the model and code

The model plate is usually under the cooktop or inside the cabinet below. Read us any error code.

  2. Counter and cabinet protection

We pad the stone edges and clear the cabinet below if we need access there.

  3. Zone and burner testing

We test each zone or burner, the controls, the fans and any downdraft.

  4. Price before repair

You get the failed part and the price before we lift the top or order parts.

  5. Cook test on every zone

We heat each zone with a pan, or light each burner, before we leave.

Symptoms

Cooktop issues that need a service visit

  • Induction zone flashes an errorThe zone may not detect the pan, or a power board or fan has a fault.
  • Touch controls unresponsiveA lock mode, moisture on the glass or a failed touch board can freeze the controls.
  • Radiant zone stays darkAn open element, a failed limiter or a bad switch stops a smooth-top zone from heating.
  • Gas flame uneven around the ringClogged ports or a burner head that is not seated give a lopsided flame.
  • Downdraft will not rise or pullA failed lift motor or blower leaves smoke hanging over the cooktop.
  • Fan hum that will not stopInduction cooling fans run after cooking, but nonstop running points to a sensor or board fault.
Here in the Valley

Island cooktops in larger North Valley homes

The larger 1970s to 2000s homes in Porter Ranch, Granada Hills, Northridge, West Hills and Chatsworth often have a cooktop set into a kitchen island. Many of those islands use a downdraft vent instead of a hood. Downdraft blowers, lift motors and grease filters are frequent repairs in these kitchens.

Island cooktops are also cooled from the cabinet below, and those cabinets are often packed with pots and pans. Induction units in particular need airflow under the counter to keep the boards cool. We check the clearance in the cabinet and the ducting of any downdraft on every island visit.

Worth weighing

What to weigh before replacing a cooktop

Cooktops are cut into stone, quartz or tile, and a new model must fit the same opening. Sizes vary even between models from one brand. Replacing a cooktop can mean recutting the counter, which adds real cost.

That is why repair is usually the better choice for boards, elements, igniters and fans. Glass replacement is also worth doing on higher-end cooktops. We tell you if your unit is truly past repair and check whether a replacement fits the existing cutout.

Before you call

Safe cooktop checks you can try

Safe checks only. If anything smells hot, sparks or involves gas, stop and call.

  • Check for a control lock or child lock symbol and hold the lock key to clear it.
  • Wipe the glass dry, since water or a damp cloth on the touch area can freeze the controls.
  • On induction, test the zone with a pan a magnet sticks to firmly.
  • Lift and reseat gas burner heads and caps so they sit flat.
  • Clear the cabinet under an induction cooktop so the cooling fan can breathe.
Questions

Cooktop Repair questions we hear in Los Angeles

Why is my induction cooktop not heating the pan?

The pan may not be induction-compatible, so test with one a magnet sticks to firmly. If the pan is fine, a power board, cooling fan or coil connection may have failed. We read the induction cooktop error code and test the board for that zone.

Why are my cooktop touch controls not responding?

Check for a control lock first, and dry the glass completely. Water, steam or a pan resting on the touch area can freeze the controls. If the cooktop still does not respond, the touch control board likely needs replacement.

Can a cracked cooktop glass be replaced?

Yes, on most models. Replacing the ceramic glass on a radiant or induction cooktop involves lifting the unit from the counter and transferring the elements or coils to the new top. Do not use a cracked cooktop, since spills can reach the electrical parts.

Do you repair downdraft cooktop vents?

Yes. We repair downdraft systems on island and peninsula cooktops, including the blower motor, the lift motor that raises the vent and the switches. We also check the grease filter and the duct below for blockages that weaken the draft.

Why does my gas cooktop burner have a weak flame?

A weak or uneven flame on a gas cooktop usually comes from clogged burner ports or a cap that is not seated. Clean the ports with a pin and reseat the cap. If the flame stays low, the burner valve may need replacement.

Why does my induction cooktop fan keep running?

Induction cooktops run a cooling fan during and after cooking to protect the boards. It should stop once the electronics cool. If the induction cooktop fan never stops, a temperature sensor or control board is likely at fault.
