Oven Repair in a Los Angeles home

$165 to $315 typical for bake or broil element

Quick answer

Oven repair centers on the heat source and the parts that control it: the bake and broil elements or gas igniter, the temperature sensor, the safety valve and the control board. If you smell gas, leave the home and call SoCalGas. Otherwise, turn the oven off and call us. We test the oven and quote the repair before we start.

We repair Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, KitchenAid, Bosch, Sub-Zero, Wolf, Thermador and the other names found in Valley kitchens and laundry rooms.

Before you call

Safe oven checks you can do

Safe checks only. If anything smells hot, sparks or involves gas, stop and call.

  • Set an oven thermometer on the middle rack and compare it with the display after 20 minutes at 350°F.
  • Look at the bake element for breaks or blisters with the oven off and cool.
  • On a gas oven, watch through the window to see if the igniter glows and the flame lights.
  • Check the breaker and confirm the clock and lights still work.
  • Make sure the oven is not in a sabbath, demo or control lock mode.
Symptoms

Oven symptoms that need a repair visit

  • Oven never reaches temperatureA weak igniter, a burned bake element or a failed sensor is the usual cause.
  • Cakes brown on one sideA failed convection fan or a weak element section creates uneven heat.
  • Burned bottoms, raw topsAn oven running hot on the bake element suggests a sensor or control fault.
  • Error code on the displayCodes such as F2 or F3 often point to the temperature sensor or its wiring.
  • Visible break in the elementA blistered or split bake element has failed and should not be used.
  • Gas odor at the ovenTurn off the oven and leave the area. Call SoCalGas or your gas utility before calling us.
The short version

How an oven knows when to heat

An oven keeps temperature by cycling its heat source on and off. A temperature sensor inside the cavity reports to the control, and the control switches the bake element or opens the gas valve. When the sensor drifts or the heat source weakens, the oven runs cold or overshoots.

Gas ovens add a step. A hot surface igniter glows and draws current, and the safety valve only opens when that current is high enough. A weak igniter can still glow orange yet never open the valve, so the oven stays cold. This is the most common gas oven failure we see.

We test with a meter and an oven thermometer rather than trusting the display. That shows whether the oven actually holds the temperature it claims. A display can read 350°F while the cavity sits 30 degrees lower.

Step by step

Steps we follow on an oven service call

Every visit follows the same order, so you always know what comes next and what it costs.

  1. Call us any hour

Tell us gas or electric, the brand and what the oven does. If you smell gas, call the gas utility first.

  2. Safety and power check

We confirm power, gas supply and any error history before opening panels.

  3. Heat and sensor tests

We test the element or igniter, sensor and control outputs with a meter.

  4. Price before work

You get the diagnosis and the repair price before we replace anything.

  5. Thermometer test bake

We preheat to 350°F and confirm the oven holds temperature with a separate thermometer.

Parts and repairs

Oven parts we test and replace

We repair ovens from Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, Samsung, LG, KitchenAid, Maytag, Bosch, Wolf, Viking and Thermador. Our technician checks resistance, current draw and actual cavity temperature before naming a part.

  • Bake elementThe lower heating coil on electric ovens. Breaks and blisters stop bake heat.
  • Broil elementThe upper coil. A failed broil element also weakens preheat on many models.
  • Gas oven igniterMust draw enough current to open the safety valve. Weak igniters are a frequent repair.
  • Oven temperature sensorReports cavity temperature to the control. A drifting sensor causes hot or cold baking.
  • Convection fan motor and elementMoves heated air for even baking. A failed fan leaves hot and cold spots.
  • Control board and keypadWe check relay outputs and key response before replacing electronics.
  • Thermal fuseCuts power if the oven overheats. A blown fuse can leave the whole oven dead.
  • Door hinges and gasketWorn hinges and a flattened gasket let heat escape and slow preheat.

Here in the Valley

Holiday baking and busy oven weeks in the Valley

Our oven calls rise sharply in the weeks before Thanksgiving and the winter holidays. Ovens that sat unused through a hot Valley summer suddenly run long roasting and baking sessions. Elements and igniters that were already weak tend to fail on the first heavy day.

Many families also cook at high heat for long stretches during holiday gatherings, and the self-clean cycle often runs right before guests arrive. That cycle reaches very high temperatures and can blow a thermal fuse or finish off a tired control board. Test your oven a week or two ahead, and skip self-clean right before a big meal.

Worth weighing

When an oven repair is the right call

Elements, igniters, sensors and fuses are inexpensive compared with a new range or oven. Replacing one usually brings the oven back to full function for years. These repairs make sense on almost any oven that is otherwise in good shape.

A failed control board on an older budget oven is the main case where replacement is worth considering. Rust through the cavity or a door that no longer seals are others. We explain the costs and let you weigh them.

Questions

Oven Repair questions we hear in Los Angeles

Why is my gas oven not heating but the stove burners work?

The most common cause is a weak oven igniter. It still glows but does not draw enough current to open the gas valve, so the burner never lights. The oven safety valve or the control can also fail. We measure igniter current to confirm before replacing parts.

Why does my oven bake unevenly?

Uneven baking usually comes from a failing convection fan, a weak element or a drifting temperature sensor. Dark pans and crowded racks also make it worse. We check the oven with a thermometer in several spots and test each heating part.

Is it safe to use an oven with a broken bake element?

No. A split or blistered bake element can arc and spark. Turn the oven off at the breaker and do not use it until the element is replaced. Replacing an oven bake element is usually a quick, affordable repair.

What does an oven F2 or F3 error code mean?

On many brands, F2 and F3 point to the oven temperature sensor or its wiring. The control sees a reading that is too high or out of range. We test the sensor resistance and harness, then replace the failed part so the code clears.

Can the self-clean cycle damage my oven?

It can on some models. The self-clean cycle runs at very high heat and can blow the thermal fuse, damage the door lock or stress the control board. If your oven stopped working after self-clean, we test those parts first.

What should I do if I smell gas near my oven?

Turn off the oven if you can do so safely, do not switch lights or appliances on or off, leave the home and call SoCalGas or your local gas utility from outside. After the gas company clears it, call us to repair the oven.
