Quick answer

Range and stove repair covers the burners, igniters, spark module, burner switches, oven heat parts and the connections behind the unit. If you smell gas, leave and call SoCalGas from outside. Safe range and stove checks

Safe checks only. If anything smells hot, sparks or involves gas, stop and call.

  • Remove burner caps, let them dry fully and reseat them square on the base.
  • Clean clogged gas ports with a straight pin or brush, not a toothpick that can snap off.
  • On a coil top, unplug the coil and plug it into a working receptacle to compare.
  • Gently tip the range forward a little; if it moves freely, the anti-tip bracket is missing.
  • Check the breaker for electric ranges; they use a double breaker that can half-trip.
Symptoms

Range problems we diagnose every week

  • Burner clicks but will not lightA wet or cracked igniter, a misaligned burner cap or a clogged port is usually the cause.
  • Clicking that never stopsMoisture under the switch or a failed spark switch keeps the module sparking nonstop.
  • Electric coil on high onlyA failed infinite switch sends full power regardless of the knob setting.
  • Glass top element deadAn open radiant element or a failed switch stops one zone from heating.
  • Range rocks when the door opensA missing or loose anti-tip bracket lets the range tip forward under weight.
  • Yellow, lazy gas flamesPoor combustion from clogged ports or a misadjusted air shutter needs attention.
The short version

One appliance, two systems to diagnose

A range is really two appliances sharing a cabinet, a power cord and often a gas connection. The surface burners use igniters, a spark module and burner valves or infinite switches. The oven below uses its own elements or igniter, a sensor and a control. A fault in shared parts, like the spark module or the power supply, can affect both.

Dual-fuel ranges add a twist by pairing gas burners on top with an electric oven below. They need both a gas line and a 240 volt circuit. We confirm both before testing any burner or element.

We also look behind the range on every visit. The gas flex connector, the power cord and the anti-tip bracket are all hidden once a range is pushed back, and each one matters for safety. Checking them takes a few minutes and often catches a problem nobody knew about.

We explain the failed part and give you the price before any work.

  5. Full cook test

We light or heat every burner and run the oven to temperature before we leave.

Parts and repairs

Range and stove parts we repair

We repair ranges from GE, Whirlpool, Frigidaire, Samsung, LG, KitchenAid, Maytag, Bosch, Wolf, Viking, Thermador, Bertazzoni, Café and Fisher & Paykel. We test each burner and the oven on its own circuit.

  • Surface burner igniterSparks to light the gas. Cracked porcelain or a broken lead stops the spark.
  • Spark moduleSends voltage to every igniter. A weak module makes all burners slow to light.
  • Spark switch on the valveTells the module to spark. A shorted switch causes constant clicking.
  • Infinite switchControls heat on electric coil and radiant tops. A failed switch sticks on high or off.
  • Coil burner receptacleA scorched or loose terminal block causes a coil to work intermittently.
  • Radiant elementThe heating ribbon under a smooth-top. We replace failed elements from below the glass.
  • Oven igniter or bake elementRestores heat in the oven half of the range.
  • Anti-tip bracketWe install or reseat the bracket so the range cannot tip forward.

Here in the Valley

Earthquake country and the hidden parts behind a range

Many Valley kitchens were rebuilt or retrofit after the 1994 Northridge earthquake, but the hidden parts behind the range were often left as they were. We still find ranges with no anti-tip bracket at all, or one that was removed during a floor replacement. A range with no bracket can tip if a child stands on the open door or a heavy pot sits on the edge.

On gas ranges served by SoCalGas, the flexible connector behind the unit also matters. Older uncoated brass connectors and stiff, kinked lines are common in homes that have not replaced a range in years. We point out connector concerns and stop the range if we find a gas problem, and the gas utility or a plumber handles the house line.

Worth weighing

Repair the range or buy a new one

Igniters, switches, modules, elements and brackets are inexpensive repairs on most ranges. A range that cooks evenly and has a sound oven door is well worth keeping. Pro-style ranges in particular are designed for long service.

A cracked glass top on a low-cost electric range, or a failed main board on an older model, may cost close to a new range. We give you both prices so the choice is clear. If you replace, we can also install the new range.

Questions

Range & Stove Repair questions we hear in Los Angeles

Why does my gas range keep clicking after the burner lights?

Constant clicking on a gas range usually means moisture under the burner knob switch or a failed spark switch. Let the range dry for a day after a spill. If it still clicks, we test the spark switches and the spark module and replace the faulty part.

Why will one stove burner not light?

A single stove burner that will not light often has a clogged port, a misaligned cap or a cracked igniter. If you hear clicking at other burners but not this one, the igniter wire may be broken. We test the igniter and clean the burner base.

Why does my electric stove burner only work on high?

An electric stove coil or radiant zone stuck on high usually has a failed infinite switch. The switch is meant to cycle power on and off at lower settings. Replacing the switch restores control and stops the burner from overheating pans.

Do you install anti-tip brackets on ranges?

Yes. We install or reseat anti-tip brackets on freestanding and slide-in ranges during a range repair or as a stand-alone visit. The bracket keeps the range from tipping if weight is placed on the open door. Most ranges come with one, but many are never installed.

Can you repair a dual-fuel range?

Yes. We repair dual-fuel ranges from Wolf, Viking, Thermador, Bertazzoni, KitchenAid and others. We test the gas burners and igniters on top and the electric oven elements, sensor and control below. Dual-fuel ranges need both gas and a 240 volt circuit, and we check both.

Should I repair a cracked glass top on my range?

A cracked glass top should not be used, since spills can reach the elements and wiring. Replacing the glass is possible on most smooth-top ranges. On older or low-cost ranges, the cost can approach a new one, and we give you both prices.
